Belvedere Castle: Views and Visitor Information

Discover the lookout at the heart of Central Park and check opening details before visiting.

Location and views

Belvedere Castle stands on Vista Rock in the middle of the park near 79th Street. The terraces look towards Turtle Pond and the Great Lawn, with the Ramble to the south. It also houses a visitor center and gift shop. Consult the official Belvedere page for the latest information.

A castle built for a view

Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mould designed the Belvedere as a lookout, rather than a residence. Its name means “beautiful view” in Italian. The Conservancy describes how the building and terraces were restored, including a major project completed in 2019.

Before you go

The castle’s opening hours, holiday closures and final terrace entry can change, so check the official page on the day. The site lists no restrooms at the castle. Paths and steps may affect your visit: review the park access map and ask the visitor center about your needs.

A pedicab route is not guaranteed to include the castle; check with the operator before booking.
