Visiting Central Park with Children

Plan a family visit around practical needs, comfortable timing and suitable activities.

Select a manageable part of the park

Look at the Conservancy visitor guide and map together and choose a few nearby places rather than trying to cross the whole park in one trip. Include breaks and find restrooms that are open when you plan to visit.

Prepare for a changing day

Check the weather, bring water and clothing for the conditions, and make a plan for meeting up if your party separates. If using a stroller or mobility aid, the access map can help identify entrances and routes.

Questions before a pedicab ride

Our listings describe the rides as family friendly, with up to three people per pedicab. For a larger family, call +1 (347) 258-6630 about arrangements. Ask in advance about a child’s age, seating, restraint needs and the route; do not assume a particular child seat or storage space is available.

Choose an age-appropriate playground

For a south-end visit, the Conservancy locates Heckscher Playground on the west side at 61st–63rd Streets; its restroom map lists a year-round accessible restroom there. Check the alerts page for temporary closures.

For toddlers and preschoolers in the north end, the Conservancy describes Bernard Family Playground near East 108th Street, with a sandbox, bucket swings and an accessible play surface. Confirm current opening and water-feature conditions before planning around them.
